A 30-year-old businessman was shot at and robbed of Rs 5 lakh by two bike-borne assailants in northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar area this afternoon, police said.

The victim has been identified as Amit Sharma who owns a chain of dairy kiosks. Sharma, who sustained bullet injury in his waist, is undergoing treatment at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

"The incident took place near the Punjab National Bank branch at Karawal Nagar around 2 PM when Sharma was going to deposit Rs 5 lakh," a police officer said, adding that "Sharma used to regularly visit the branch to deposit money".

As Sharma resisted their bid, the robbers shot at him and fled with the bag. "Sharma was rushed to the hospital by locals. Some of them even tried to nab the assailants but failed," the officer said.

A case of attempt to murder and robbery has been registered at Karawal Nagar police station. Investigators suspect the role of an insider as the attackers were aware that Sharma was carrying cash.

"There is a possibility of the involvement of the gang which had looted a petrol pump employee in Anand Vihar area in East Delhi a few days ago. We are scanning the CCTV footage of the bank and nearby shops to identify the assailants," the officer added.
