C'tutional bench to be formed in SC to dispose pending cases

Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam today said a constitutional bench would soon be formed to dispose important pending cases in the Supreme Court, immediately after the Mullaperiyar dam case is over.

"Immediately after the Mullaiperiyar case, a constitutional bench will be formed to dispose important cases in the Supreme Court, which are pending for long," he said.

The vexed Mullaperiyar issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala over its safety has for long defied a solution. While Tamil Nadu contends that the dam is safe and its water level has to be raised from 132 feet to 136 feet, Kerala says the structure is weak and it has to be replaced with a new one.
 

Justice Sathasivam recalled that the first thing he had done after assuming office was to get details of pending cases in all courts in the country.

The CJI urged lawyers and judges to act swiftly to ensure speedy disposal of cases to ensure litigant public get justice on time.

He was speaking at a function got up here by Erode Bar Association and Advocates Association of Erode to felicitate him on assuming the top post.

On boycott of courts by lawyers to highlight their grievances, the CJI suggested that lawyers and the Bar Association represent their grievances with the Administrative Judge of the district or meet the High Court Chief Justice and represent their problems to get it settled.

To requests for granting site for Sub-courts at Perudurai and Sathyamangalam, he said he would represent their plea with Erode District Administrative judge for immediate solution.

The CJI recalled his experiences as judge of the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court. He said the post of CJI is a coveted one, with huge responsibility and that he and other judges have to spend more than seven hours a day to read appeals before admission of the cases.
