A bill to enhance the pecuniary jurisdiction of civil suits of the Delhi High Court from the existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore is likely to be taken up by the Union Cabinet in its next meeting.
The Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2014 aims at reducing workload of the Delhi High Court by transferring civil suits, valued up to Rs 2 crore, to the nine district courts in Delhi.
The bill was introduced by the previous UPA government in Rajya Sabha in February and was referred to the Standing Committee.
As the committee has approved the bill, the Law Ministry has decided to move the Cabinet to clear the proposal. The proposal could come up before the Cabinet in its next meeting likely to be held next week, ministry sources said.
The Standing Committee of Parliament on Law and Personnel gave its report in the Winter session of Parliament.
At present, cases involving even a small property are required to be filed before the HC as it has the jurisdiction of civil suits involving Rs 20 lakh and above.
Pecuniary jurisdiction refers to the jurisdiction of a court over a suit based on the amount or value of its subject matter.
