Government today said Cachar Paper Mill (CPM), a unit of Hindustan Paper Corporation, is facing financial crisis on account of non-availability of coal.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Babul Supriyo said that coal is not available due to a blanket ban imposed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) on mining and transportation of coal in Meghalaya, which supplied 100 per cent requirement of the mill.

"Coal cannot be sourced from other places as there is no broad gauge linkage inside CPM premises," he said.

The minister said that after realising the problem, the government has taken several measures which includes grant for meeting the mill's operational costs on account of transportation to mitigate the logistic disadvantages of CPM.

The Department of Heavy Industry has also provided working capital support for the mill.

Replying to a separate question on surplus land with central PSUs, Supriyo said a web portal has been set up by the Ministry of Urban Development to develop a centralised database of all government land including those belonging to government-controlled statutory authorities and CPSEs.

"This centralised database will help in the optimum utilisation of land with the Central Public Sector Enterprises," he said.
