A 10-day-old abandoned calf fell into a 15-feet open pit and was safely rescued after a three-hour long struggle.

The calf tripped and fell into the pit last night at Manali Puthu Nagar here while walking on the roadside. Fire and Rescue Services personnel with the support of local people pulled the calf out using ropes.

"We brought the calf to Ayya Vaikundar Temple premises where there a lot of cows. It is being taken care there," C Murali, the leading fireman who led the rescue told PTI.

Meanwhile, during the two-hour heavy showers late last night, trees were uprooted in a dozen locations in Chennai and suburbs, police said.
