Campaign launched to collect wet, dry wastes separately

On the occasion of the World Environment Day today, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh launched a campaign to segregate dry and wet waste materials from houses and shops in the state.

Under this 'Segregation at Source' initiative, municipal corporations or councils would provide two dustbins, one green and one blue, to every households and shops to collect wet and dry waste materials, an official release said.

People would require to keep wet garbage in green dustbins and dry waste materials in blue dustbins.

Addressing a programme on World Environment Day here, Biren said, "Nature does not require us, but we need nature for our survival."
 

People needed to take a collective pledge to conserve nature for sustainable development and survival of human beings, he said.

The chief minister said that under the 'Green Imphal' campaign, he planted many saplings around the city and cleaned Nambul river.

Deliberations were also on to impose ban on the use of polythene bags in the state to check environment degradation and health hazards, Biren said.

Stating that deforestation was the main cause for frequent landslides in hill areas, he urged the public to plant more saplings instead of felling trees.

The chief minister said that a team of volunteers has been formed to plant 1000 saplings in different parts of the state as part of environment protection campaign.

He asked the public not to dump waste materials into rivers.

Forest and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Biren and other dignitaries planted saplings at Ima Keithel as part of the World Environment Day programme, the release said.
