The campaigning for Alapur seat in Ambedkarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh came to an end this evening.

Alapur goes to polls on March 9 as voting for this constituency had been postponed due to death of SP candidate Chandrashekhar Kanaujia.

He died of heart attack on February 12 while campaigning in Ambedkar Nagar.

The polls were to be held on February 15 in the second of the seven-phase polling for the state assembly elections.

As per law, if a candidate of a recognised party dies, it is countermanded and party is given time to field a new candidate and polling fixed for the new date.

The Alapur seat was held by Bhim Prasad Sonkar of SP. He was not fielded by the party this time.

After death of 40-year-old Kanaujia, SP has fielded his widow.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today addressed an election meeting in Alapur seeking votes for his party nominee.

The Election Commission has also postponed telecast of exit polls till 5:30 PM on Thursday, keeping this polling in mind.
