Locals of Canacona town in south Goa today held a spontaneous protest condemning the alleged rape and murder of a 28-year-old British woman on March 14.

Danielle McLaughling was found dead at an isolated stretch between Agonda and Canacona beaches. Subsequently, police arrested a local history-sheeter Vikat Bhagat in connection with the crime.

Canacona observed a half-day protest today during which a condolence meeting was held.

The shops remained closed in morning hours, before they were reopened after the meeting.

Police Inspector Filomeno Costa said the protest was spontaneous one.

"Shopkeepers voluntarily closed down their shops. The protest was peaceful," said Costa who is the investigating officer in the case.

As per postmortem report, the woman was sexually assaulted before she was throttled and hit on head with a beer bottle by the accused who also allegedly smashed her face.

The mortal remains of the Briton were flown to Ireland, where her family lives, last week and final rites were performed yesterday, Costa said.
