Courage and bravery shown by a group of villagers saved the lives of five members of a family when a car plunged into the Sirhind canal near a bridge in village Gurthali in Khanna area today, the police said.

The family was travelling from village Jaspal Bangar to Issru after attending a function when they stopped near Gurthali.

DIG Ludhiana police range Gurinder Gayee said that the family was sitting in the car when they asked the driver to go out and buy something.

Suddenly, the vehicle began moving and slid into the Sirhind canal.

However, Ajit Singh, sarpanch of village Gurthali, who was passing by, heard the family crying for help. He gathered fellow villagers and rushed to help.

Tying ropes to trees, the villagers jumped into the water. After tying the car with a rope, they pushed it towards the bank.

The two children in the car were made to sit on the roof of the vehicle.

Others in the family included two women and a man.

DIG Yurinder Singh Hayer said that it was because of timely action taken by sarpanch Ajit Singh that the family was saved.

The driver claimed that he had applied the hand-brake but still the vehicle rolled down in the canal, police officials said.
