Animal lovers today held a car rally in the city to protest against growing instances of atrocities on animals.

The rally, organised by Dhyan Foundation and supported by People for Animals (PFA), started from Tees January Marg and concluded at Haryana DC's office.

"It is important for everyone, no matter what the caste, creed or religion, to show a united front against the cruel and inhuman treatment meted towards animals. The law needs to be followed and the punishment for the offences needs to be revised," the Dhyan Foundation said in a statement.

It said that over 24,000 cases of animal cruelty have been reported in India in the last three years.

"There are at least five times more cases that go unreported. Monkeys are being shot down in Himachal Pradesh, wild boars and nilgais killed in Bihar, and cattle in Bengal, Odisha and Karnataka and dogs in Kerala," it said.

Ambika Shukla of PFA said, "We need to change the thought process that people who are coming forward to protect cows from slaughtering are doing something wrong. People who are coming forward are not caring about their own lives and they are not getting any awards for this act," she said.
