A youth was shot dead and another critically injured when unidentified persons, fleeing in a car that fatally hit a cyclist, opened fire on mob chasing them at Kulipara in Malda district today, police said.
A senior police officer said while 18-year-old Asim Mondal died on the spot after being hit by a bullet his teenaged friend Rahul Paswan got seriously injured in the firing.
Paswan was being rushed to a Kolkata Hospital from Malda Medical College as the bullet is still stuck in his brain.

The MUV was fleeing after knocking down a cyclist, who died on the spot. As some locals, including the two youths, gave them a chase they opened fire, the officer said.
Irate locals blocked Malda-Manikchak Road for some time while RAF personnel were deployed in the area.
Some eyewitnesses told the media that vehicle, which managed to escape in the melee, had been officially used by the Englishbazar Panchayat Samity Sabhapati Pabitra Roy but no police officer commented on this.

In a late night development, the Panchayat Samity Sabhapati Pabitra Roy surrendered before the English Bazar police station, a police officer said.
Locals had alleged the vehicle was used by Roy for official work and an complaint was filed against him by the victim's families, the officer said adding investigations were on.
