Car thief arrested

A 59-year-old thief, who stole

six cars in the city in last few months, was arrested from Nagpada area in south Mumbai, a crime branch officer said today.

The accused identified as Mohammed Ansari was arrested last week in a trap laid at Nagpada area, Crime Branch police inspector Nandkumar Gopale said adding, Ansari is also wanted by Navghar police station here for ramming a car into a policeman on duty on May 29 in Mulund.

"We had information that Ansari would be coming to Nagpada area to meet his friends. We laid a trap and nabbed him," Gopale said.
 

During interrogation, Ansari revealed that on May 29 night while he was driving a stolen car, a police constable tried to stop him during a nakabandi in Mulund but with a fear of being caught, he sped away the car causing injuries to the cop.

Following the incident, the Navghar police had registered an attempt to murder case against an unidentified person.

"Ansari also gave details of the six stolen cars, which were subsequently recovered," police said.

The accused has been remanded to police custody till June 13.
