Bike-borne armed men allegedly waylaid the occupants of a car in central Delhi's Ranjit Nagar area and robbed a bag containing cash worth lakhs of rupees, police said Wednesday.

Police said they were informed about an armed robbery around 10:30 am.

On reaching the spot, police learnt that four persons who were travelling in a car carrying a cash bag were robbed at gunpoint near Madhav Setu area, a senior police officer said.

The victims told police that they were robbed of Rs 39 lakh. However, police said the exact amount is being ascertained.

Investigations revealed the victims who work for a company which collects cash from various shops had just left from a shop and on the way, their vehicle was intercepted by two or three persons on a motor-vehicle. The accused fled after firing two shots and snatching the bag containing cash, the officer said.

One of the shots hit the steering and another hit the window of the car. However, no one has been injured in the incident, he said.

A case has been registered and the matter is being probed, the officer said.

CCTV footages are being scanned to ascertain the exact sequence of event, police said, adding multiple teams have been formed to trace the accused.

Further investigation is underway.
