The carcass of a shark was today recovered by forest department officials near the lighthouse at the Puri sea beach here.

The dead animal was first spotted by local fishermen and brought the carcass to the shore. The length of the animal is about 16 feet and width 9 feet. The animal is categorised as schedule-1 marine creature, said Range Officer Asit Mishra said.

"Initially we thought it to be the carcass of a whale. But, later we confirmed that it belongs to shark species," he said.

The reason for the death could be ascertained only after post mortem, he said.
