The carcass of a whale, weighing about 20 tonnes and 45 feet long was today found washed ashore at Mandapam near here, officials said.
Forest Ranger Jaffer said they were investigating the reasons for the death and why it had been washed ashore.
"It is very rare to see a whale in the Gulf of Mannar region," he said.
