A case was today registered against the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, A Ganapathy, on charges of not considering the candidature of a woman belonging to SC/ST for the post of Assistant Professor.

Based on a complaint by the woman, National Human Rights Commission member Marimuthu inquired into the matter and directed the police to register case against Ganapathy under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, police said.

The woman alleged that she had applied for the job which was reserved for the SC/ST category.

Since no other candidate was available, she should have been appointed for the post.

But a man from outside category was appointed, which she said was against the rules.

She also alleged that the university had removed her husband, a driver working under consolidated category, after she filed the case in a court on her non-appointment.

However, the university maintained that the selection committee did not select her as a better candidate was preferred. The syndicate also had the same opinion, it said.

Since her case was pending in a court, the University was not in a position to make further comments, it said in a statement.

Regarding the suspension of her husband, the statement said the syndicate had unanimously resolved to remove him from the service due to his drinking habits.
