The number of people suffering from cancer has increased in Jammu and Kashmir, with over 50,000 patients diagnosed with various forms of the ailment being treated at three different hospitals of the state.
This was told to the Legislative Council by the Jammu and Kashmir government, which added that no formal assessment report on increasing cancer cases is available.
Minister of Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-Din said as many as 56,716 cancer patients have been registered with oncology departments of government medical colleges in Jammu and Srinagar and the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences.

Taj, who was responding to question by National Conference member Bashir Ahmad Veeri, said no formal assessment report on the rise of cases of cancer is available in the state.
He said that as per rough data collected from department of radiation oncology at the GMCs and the SKIMS, the cases of cancer have been on the rise.
Taj also rubbished reports that the three top hospitals of the state are not proving enough to cater to the medical needs of people of the state in wake of the increasing population.
The facilities at these hospitals have been strengthened and upgraded through additional infrastructure and latest machinery and equipment.
He further informed that two super speciality hospitals -- one each at Jammu and Srinagar -- are also coming up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakha Yojana.
