Employee of a local cash courier firm was allegedly shot at and robbed of Rs 1.30 lakh by a gang of six armed men here today.

One of the assailants was caught and thrashed by a crowd while he was trying to flee in V P Road area of south Mumbai this morning, police said.

Carrying a bag, purportedly containing Rs 1.30 lakh, Surtaji Prajapati (45), along with a colleague was walking towards his office when the robbers struck.

The gang members fired four rounds in the air to create fear. During the chaos, two of the robbers, who were on a bike, tried to snatch the bag from Prajapati. When he resisted, Mohammed Intezar Pathan, one of the bikers, opened firing, injuring Prajapati on his hand, police said.

Pathan fell from the bike while escaping. A crowd which had assembled at the spot got hold of him and thrashed him badly. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later arrested. The other assailants escaped with the booty, police said.

Pathan is a history-sheeter who faces over a dozen criminal cases, including attempt to murder and robbery, they added.
