Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Welfare will start disbursing under the 'direct benefit transfer' system cash payment of Rs 600 to the account of the card holders in nationalised banks in the next two days in Puducherry and Karaikal.

A release from the Directorate said today government had by modifying the ten kg free rice scheme a month to each card holder announced that every month Rs 300 would be credited to the account of the card holders in their accounts in nationalised banks instead of rice through ration shops. The directorate would deposit Rs 600 for each ration card relating to the last two months in the next two days.

The release said that the cash would be available only for card holders who had already submitted the details of the bank account numbers and linked the ration cards with Aadhaar cards. Those who were yet to submit these details should submit them in their respective ration shops on or before March 21.

There are three lakh families covered under the ration card system in the two regions. But as of now only 2.03 lakh families alone had linked their ration cards with Aadhaar numbers and also submitted numbers of their accounts in nationalised banks.

If the card holders do not submit the details before the deadline their cards would be deleted from the list maintained by the directorate assuming that they are not at all residing anywhere in the Union Territory, the release added.
