A cashier working with a private company, who was on his way to deposit cash in banks, was waylaid by two unidentified persons and looted of Rs 16.64 lakh here, police said Tuesday.
The incident took place Monday noon in Kalyan, they said.
According to a complaint by the victim, Sashikant Chavan, who works as a cashier with a distributor in Ulhasnagar, had set out for Kalyan on a scooter with Rs 16.64 lakh in cash for depositing it in two banks.
Enroute, two persons apprehended him and also beat him up, the police said.
They took him to an isolated location near Ambivili station where they forced him to part with the cash and fled on his scooter, they said.
The victim managed to get an autorickshaw and reached his workplace after which he lodged a complaint, the police said.
A case has been registered, but no arrest has been made, they added.
