Caste tension simmers in Pabnawa village, 2 more arrested

Five days after members of a Dalit community were attacked in Pabnawa village here, police today arrested two more persons while district administration formed a committee to probe the incident in which several villagers and seven policemen were injured.

A 20-year-old girl of upper caste Ror community had allegedly eloped and married a Dalit boy of the village on April 8.

After that, Dalit houses were attacked and the two community clashed on Saturday, according to police.

At least seven police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, were injured in the violence.

"Two more persons have been arrested today in connection with the Saturday's violence, taking the total number of arrests to 15," Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh Yadav said.
 

Deputy Commissioner Chander Shekhar also appealed the villagers to maintain peace and harmony.

The DC said here that a team of officers under the supervision of Sub Divisional Officer (Civil) Hawa Singh has been constituted for further investigation of the incident.

According to Dalit families residing in the village, the members belonging to the dominant Ror community had allegedly ransacked their houses and shops on Saturday as they were agitated by the marriage of the girl belonging to their community to a Dalit youth on April 8.

The DC said the team would also assess the damage caused to the houses after the incident.

The officer also said the supply of electricity, water and milk, which had been disrupted, has now been restored to village and arrangements of foodgrain and fodder for animals had been ensured.

In the backdrop of some Dalit families threatening to leave the village, the DC said that "peace committees" have been constituted to maintain peace and unity in the village.

Adequate police force had been deployed for security purpose.
