Casualty due to militant activities in Meghalaya has almost tripled in the last five years with the number of deaths rising from 22 in 2010 to 61 in 2013, indicating a deteriorating internal security in the state, an official report said.
A total of 199 were killed in militancy-related incidents from January 2010 to June 23, 2014, of which 93 were civilians, 89 were militants and 17 were policemen, said the police report released to the media today.
The number of civilian casualty has risen eight times from only four deaths in 2010 to 34 till last December, it said, adding, in this period 469 militants were arrested while 91 surrendered.
And this year, till yesterday, 13 civilians were killed while three policemen were injured, it stated.
Cases of abductions has also risen almost ten times in this period from only three in 2010 to 28 so far in 2014.
Police have seized 233 arms and 5735 ammunition besides 128 hand grenades and 181 Gelatin sticks, it said.
The survey also said that the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) inflicted the most deaths, killing 87 persons including 17 policemen while 44 of its members were killed and 217 of them arrested.
Fifty five members of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and eight of its sympathisers were arrested in this period, it said.
Since 2010, 15 ULFA and 16 NDFB militants were arrested while other minor militant groups such as the LAEF, ASAK, UALA and other accounted for the rest of the incidents, the report stated.
