The CBI has busted a gang of alleged drug peddlers from Punjab and arrested four persons, including two women, while trafficking about 107 kg of ganja (Cannabis) to the poll-bound state from the national capital.

Acting on a tip-off, CBI sleuths arrested Sukhveer Kumar, Prem, Gurmito and Mindro - all residents of Rajpura in Patiala district of Punjab - on December 16 when they were returning to Punjab in a vehicle after buying the narcotic substance, sources said, adding Prem and Gurmito are husband and wife.

Fifty packets of ganja stuffed in five bags and kept in the rear portion of the vehicle were seized during the search.

Also Rs 29,100 in cash was recovered, they said.

During questioning, the four accused confessed to their crime and case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered but no case was registered against the driver after the accused said he was not aware of content of the bags, they added.

Assembly elections are scheduled in Punjab early next year.
