The Central Bureau of Investigation today arrested a Chandigarh police sub-inspector for allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh as bribe.

It is alleged that the SI was demanding a bribe of Rs 9 lakh from a property dealer to help him in connection with a police case against his employees.

"The complainant (the property dealer) has alleged that a case dated September 17, 2017 was registered at Police Station, Sector 31, Chandigarh against three of his employees and six others. A police team visited his business premises to nab his employees and also harassed the complainant," a CBI spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said it was further alleged that the sub-inspector had demanded Rs 9 lakh for not "harassing" him and for favouring his employees during investigation.

The SI also informed the complainant that Rs 1 lakh of the said bribe money was meant for himself and the remaining for the SHO, the CBI alleged.

"The CBI laid a trap and caught the SI red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 2 lakh. Searches are being conducted on the premises of the accused," he said.
