CBI arrests EPFO official for demanding bribe of Rs 15 lakh

CBI has arrested an official of Employees Provident Fund Organisation along with a consultant for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 13 lakh for showing favour in the EPF liability of a hospital.

CBI sources said Vinayak D Sonawane, Area Enforcement Officer, Employees Provident Fund Organisation and private person Ganesh Phatak, EPFO Consultant, were arrested by Anti-corruption branch of the agency here.

It is allleged Sonawane was demanding a bribe of Rs 15 lakh from a person for showing favour in the EPF liability of Philia Hospital, Palghar. Finally the deal was struck at Rs 13 lakh which was to be collected by Phatak on behalf of Sonawane, they said.
 

"After verifying the demand of bribe by Vinayak D Sonawane, a trap was laid against them and both the accused persons were apprehended and the tainted trap money was recovered from them," a CBI official said.

The sources said searches are going on at the residential and official premises of both the accused persons.
