CBI has arrested four persons in connection with an incident during the 2012 ethnic violence between the Bodos and minorities in Assam in which over 100 people were killed and thousands displaced.

CBI sources said four persons have been arrested in connection with the riots in Karigaon area of Kokrajhar district but refused to give their identity.

The agency team led by a DIG-level officer carried out searches during its probe early this month during which it got number of leads on the alleged perpetrators of the riots.

The sources said the situation on ground level was still very tense and any information about the arrest of persons from a particular community could spark violence hence the officers have to be very cautious.

They said the investigating officers move under police patrol because of the tense situation in the area.

Over 100 people had lost their lives in the ethnic clashes which took place during July 2012, while over four lakh people had been displaced. The state government has claimed that around one lakh of the displaced persons have returned to their homes in recent days.

In Karigaon area, two bodies were recovered from Champamati river.

The agency has also announced a cash reward of up to Rs one lakh to anyone who provide credible information which could lead to identification or arrest of the perpetrators.

CBI constituted a team under two DIGs to probe seven violence cases registered by it in three districts of lower Assam -- Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri.
