The CBI has arrested an inspector of the Income Tax department for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs five lakh for extending favours to an I-T assessee.

Dinesh, the inspector, was nabbed from Ernakulam in Kerala for allegedly receiving the bribe.

A CBI spokesperson today said a case of corruption was registered against Dinesh on the complaint that he had visited the complainant's hospital on December 9, 2016 and scrutinised the documents relating to Income Tax.

"It was further alleged that the accused demanded an amount of Rs 10 lakh from the complainant, saying that he had done some 'favours' to the complainant and later reduced the demand to Rs five lakh," CBI spokesperson R K Gaur said.

He said the agency laid a trap and arrested the inspector red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs five lakh from the complainant.

"Search was conducted at the residential premises of the accused which led to recovery of incriminating documents and cash of Rs 30,000," he said.
