CBI today carried out searches at the prestigious Viswa Bharati University in Santiniketan in connection with alleged irregularities committed by a former Vice-Chancellor.

CBI sources said searches started at seven places this morning after the agency registered a case on a reference received from the Central government in this regard.

It is alleged that UGC guidelines were not followed in the appointment process during the tenure of a former Vice-Chancellor, the sources said.

The University was founded by Rabindranath Tagore.

It has been alleged in the FIR that the then Vice Chancellor Sushanta Dattagupta, in connivance with other accused officials, appointed Shyamala Ray Nair as Deputy Registrar which was illegal and in violation of UGC guidelines.

The email sent to Dattagupta seeking his reaction on the controversy remained unanswered.
