CBI court convicts Customs Dept official

CBI Court here has convicted a customs department official for allegedly accepting bribe at the container freight station.

During a surprise check conducted at the All Cargo Global Container Freight Station of Customs department, at Thiruvottriyur on August 12, 2009, the department's appraiser, Karanjit Singh was nabbed for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 14,000 from an employee of a clearing agency for clearing 12 cargo containers containing imported heavy metal steel scrap, CBI release here said.

Besides, an unaccounted money of Rs 56,400 was also seized from Singh and subsequently, a complaint was lodged against him under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
 

At the conclusion of trial, CBI Cases, Additional Special Judge, S Malathi convicted Singh to one year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000, it said.
