"CBI has, after registration and investigation of various cases, filed reports under Section 173 of Criminal Procedure Code in 1,625 cases during the last three years and current year i.E. 2009, 2010, 2011 and current year (as on July 31, 2012)", Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions V Narayanasamy told Rajya Sabha today in a written reply.
The reports were filed "on grounds of loss caused to the Government on account of decision or decisions taken, orders passed by Ministers and or officers of Government of India," Narayanasamy said.
Of the total cases, chargesheets were filed in 1,406 matters and 219 others were closed.
"After investigation of the cases, the decision to file report under section 173 CrPC (chargesheet or closure) is taken by CBI on the basis of availability of the evidence and the provisions of law," he said.
Narayanasamy said that 64 of these cases were referred to the CBI by High Courts, 38 by state Governments and four by Supreme Court.
