The CBI today raided Tezpur Head Post Office in Assam's Sonitpur district searching for details on alleged misappropriation of funds in transactions and anomalies against customer accounts, said the central investigation agency's officials.

A three-member CBI team from Delhi raided the offices in the Tezpur Head Post Office searching for details on misappropriation of a huge amount of transaction, the officials told reporters here.

Stating that investigations began this morning and would continue for next five days, the officials said six officials and employees of the Post Office have been interrogated regarding the anomalies.

For the last few years severe anomalies have been reported against many accounts held by customers, particularly when the Core Banking System (CBS) was introduced in 2011 in this office, they said.

Some inactive silent accounts for many years were revived and used for depositing via e-banking allegedly by some officials of the Post Office, the CBI officials said.

The silent accounts were revived with fake figures thereby leading to a complete disorder of the entire process, they said adding, during 2014-15 an anomaly of Rs 1.4 crore had occurred.

In connection with the anomalies an employee of the Post Office was suspended, the officials said.

The Post Office covers 47 sub-post offices under Darrang Postal Division and handles sorting of parcels, processing and delivering of mails, deals with financial transactions including various savings schemes and others.
