Footage of CCTV cameras at a private lodge near the bus stand here helped police identify the person who stole a bag containing 102 sovereigns of jewels, and cash through a window of a room which was kept open by a pilgrim from Tiruchirappalli, today.
Police said they had identified the man and he was a driver from Munnar in Kerala,who had come to the lodge to drop pilgrims,and went back.A team has been rushed to Munnar to nab the driver, police said.
Police said CCTV recordings showed the driver holding the stolen bag in his hand,and checking its content.A bunch of 1000-rupee notes was also seen falling from the bag accidentally and he was seen picking them up hastily, they said.
The pilgrim had come to Rameswaram to offer worship in the temple and had stayed in the lodge with members of his family.His wife had slept in the room leaving the bag, containing the jewels and cash near the window, police said.
