Installing CCTV cameras in staff rooms where teachers relax in their free time between classes amounts to breach of their privacy and freedom, Kendriya Vidyalya teachers have said.

The issue was raised by female teachers during a recent joint consultative meeting (JCM) with the KV administration.

Male teachers also supported their argument alleging that the surveillance equipment is also used as means to harass staffers.

"Installing CCTVs in various areas of schools including the classroom is a good step to ensure quality teaching and safety of students but teachers are of the view that installing them in staff rooms where female employees relax between classes amounts to breach of their freedom and privacy," a senior official said.

The list of demands submitted to the KV administration included "halting CCTV installation at staff rooms and offices with immediate effect" besides confiscation of video footage that could portray female staffers in an embarrassing light.

A senior official of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), the administrative body for all KVs, said, "the matter has been taken note of and certain guidelines about installation of CCTVs in schools will be issued soon".
