Sending out a strong message, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath today said any kind of violation of the model code of conduct in force for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections would attract severe action.

"Stringent action will be taken against those who violated the code of conduct," he told reporters in brief chat after offering his obeisance at the famous hill temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala near here.

The contesting candidates should not carry more than Rs 50,000 and cash in excess would be confiscated, he added.

Temple sources said the CEC, who arrived on a five-hour pilgrimage, worshipped the presiding deity. Later, he also visited Sri Padmavathi temple in Tiruchanur near here before taking a flight to New Delhi.

Sampath had on March 5 announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections, to be held in nine phases from April 7 to May 12. The counting of votes will be on May 16.
