Residents of Mohadiya village in Punjab's Fatehgarh Sahib district erupted in celebrations after the Aam Aadmi Party named Gul Panag, whose family hails from here, as its candidate for Lok Sabha polls from Chandigarh.

The residents of the village feel that the announcement was like a gift to Panag on her marriage anniversary. Former Miss India and actor Panag tied the knot with pilot Rishi Attari on March 13.

Rajinder Singh (51), a farmer, said the villagers were proud that a girl from the village has become a national celebrity. Singh is hopeful that Gul will win election from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat and work for the welfare of the people.

Another villager, Jaswant Singh (55), said Gul had great affection from the village. Though her family shifted to Chandigarh, they still have a house and property in the village.

Gul's father, Lt Gen (retd) H S Panag who had joined the AAP last month or other family members used to visit the village frequently.

Hazara Singh (80) said Gul used to visit her native village to convince women to say no to female foeticide.
