"After assessing the dam and its various environmental issues, the team returned to New Delhi to submit its report to the Centre," said Raza Abbas, SDM Srinagar.

The project on Alaknanda river is facing opposition from some environmentalists and sadhus.

However, a section of people from Srinagar have asked the Centre not to stop the construction of the Alaknanda project in the national interest.

The team members met the protesters to elicit thier views.

The team's visit came after seers decided to hold a protest meet at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi tomorrow under the banner of Ganga Mukti Sangram.

Badrinathpeeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand, who will take part in the protest in the national capital, said a separate ministry for conservation of Ganga should be set up.

He said he had also sent a six-point charter of demands to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi over the issue.

Besides, the Shankaracharya said, he had also initiated consultations with top seers of the country on the issue. MORE
