The Centre will send a team to Amethi in Uttar Pradesh to investigate the alleged leakage and diversion of foodgrains meant for ration shops sale to poor, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said today.

The minister added the team will submit the report within a week.

"There is a report today that PDS foodgrains in Amethi is being diverted and sold to other places. We are sending a team to investigate the matter. The team will submit a report in a week," Paswan told reporters.

The government is making efforts to computerize the entire Public Distribution System (PDS) to check leakage and corruption in distribution of foodgrains, he added.

Paswan said the UP government has been able to install only two PoS (point of sale) machines, which are very helpful in plugging pilferage at ration shops.

He asked the state government to put in place all necessary modern infrastructure specified for effective implementation of National Food Security Act under which highly subsidised rice and wheat are distributed.

Amethi Lok Sabha seat is represented by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.
