A central team will soon visit Haryana to assess the drought situation in the state and damage to kharif crops.

"Haryana has declared drought in all 21 districts. A central team has been constituted for assessing the situation. The team will visit the state soon," a senior Agriculture Ministry official told PTI.

Haryana, which received about 50 per cent deficient rains during the Kharif (summer) season, has demanded an assistance of over Rs 4,000 crore from the Centre, the official added.

The deficit in total monsoon rains across the country has narrowed down to 11 per cent so far. The situation has improved in most states barring Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and some states in north east region.

Major kharif crops grown in the state are rice, jowar, bajra, maize, cotton, jute, sugarcane, sesame and groundnut.
