A Central government team today visited Kaithal in Haryana to assess the loss to crops due to drought like conditions and recent rains in certain parts of the district.
The state government has demanded a compensation of Rs 4548 crore from the Centre to compensate farmers, officials said.
The team visited Pinjupura, Kalayat, Balu, Bata, Kelram and Titram villages, they said.
In Pinjupura village, sarpanch Balwant Singh informed the team that farmers had to spend heavily on diesel to run tubewells due to weak monsoon.
Balu residents said the failure of monsoon in July and rains in September had made their lives miserable, according to the officials.
Taking the team around Pinjupura, Kaithal Additional Deputy Commissioner Arvind Malhan and Deputy Director of Agriculture Rohtas said paddy and cotton crops had suffered badly due to weak monsoon and recent rains.
Rohtas informed the team that crops sown in 500 hectares in Kalayat, 400 hectares in Bata and 50 hectares in Pinjupura had been damaged badly.
