The intimation from the West Bengal government, received on February 8 this year, was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

In February 2009, the CCEA had approved the proposal of the West Bengal government to set up the Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR) Project in Haldia.

However early this year, the state government informed the Centre it will not implement PCPIR project and rather develop an industrial park, power plant and an eco-tourism park in Haldia.

According to an official statement, the implementation of PCPIR project are reviewed by the Centre on quarterly basis. But the West Bengal government stopped attending all review meetings after the new government came into power.

"After the new government took over in West Bengal, there were news reports that as promised during the elections to the State Legislative Assembly, the new government would not go ahead with the PCPIR project. The state government also stopped attending all review meetings," the statement said.
