A day after an American woman was allegedly attacked inside a local train here, Shiv Sena today criticised the Centre over its "apathetic" attitude towards security of women on suburban trains.

"It seems that the central government is apathetic towards appointing security personnel in the ladies compartment of the suburban local trains," Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe told reporters here.

"I met Government Railway Police (GRP) Commissioner Prabhat Kumar and discussed with him yesterday's incident as well as the issue of women's security. More than six similar cases have taken place this year," she said.

The Sena legislator said according to Kumar, GRP had earlier sent a proposal to the central government seeking more number of security personnel, but "they did not get a reply".

Yesterday an American woman was attacked and robbed of her mobile phone in the ladies' compartment of a local train. The incident had taken place between Marine Lines and Charni Road stations of Western Railway when an unidentified man boarded the ladies compartment and tried to snatch the bag of Michelle Mark.

Gorhe said she had earlier given a memorandum of demands on the issue to the state Home Minister R R Patil. "I will again submit the memorandum to him," she said.

On July 26, another woman was attacked inside the ladies compartment near Mahalaxmi station when she resisted a molestation attempt.
