A top Punjab official today said the Centre should share cost of distribution of foodgrains under the Food Security Scheme.

"Food security has now become an Act. The Centre should share expenditure to be incurred on its implementation," Punjab Food Secretary D S Grewal said here.

Stating that a lot of efforts are required for the implementation of the food scheme, Grewal said the state government has sought Rs 1.50 per kg as cost on transportation, storage and margin to fair price shops.

The state government has sought 8.70 lakh tonne of wheat under the scheme for its 1.41 crore beneficiaries.

"We have also asked the Centre to allocate fresh wheat for distribution under the scheme," he said.

The state government has also pitched for distribution of pulses under this central scheme.

The Punjab government is already running the Atta-Dal scheme under which it is giving subsidised wheat flour and pulses to over 15 lakh beneficiaries, he added.
