The Centre plans to create accreditation centres in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), the HRD Ministry has said.

Replying to question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey said the government has a proposal in this regard to "speed up" the accreditation process.

A member sought to know whether the government has any plan to grant accreditation status to IITs and IIMS, to which Pandey's written reply said, "Yes".

"Goverment has a proposal to create a reliable accreditation centres in IITs and IIMS. Details in this regard are being worked out.

"The objective of the accreditation centre is to assess the colleges/institions/universities based on the accreditation process of NBA/NAAC and also mentor the institutions of their jurisdiction to participate in the accreditation process," it said.

In August, HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar had said the government will float an idea to enable IITs and IIMs become accreditation bodies so that burden of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is eased.
