In a high-level meeting, Union Home Secretary R K Singh took stock of the law and order situation in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) where nearly 90 people lost their lives during the month-long violence.
Sources said Singh asked Assam DGP J N Chaudhury and others, who attended the meeting, to ensure peace and assured all central help for relief and rehabilitation. More than 8,000 paramilitary personnel are deployed in the four violence affected districts.
Assam government officials conveyed that out of the 5.2 lakh affected people, only 2.3 lakh people are currently living in relief camps and the number of such camps also reduced from 340 to 218.
Altogether 104 new fixed security pickets were set up in BTAD areas to restore peace while 170 people were arrested after registering 1442 cases in different police stations.
A judicial inquiry has also been ordered by the Assam government besides seven cases have so far been handed over to the CBI for probe. Other cases are being probed by the Special Investigating Team constituted by the state government.
Sources said as suggested by a seven-member team of senior officials of Central government, who visited the affected districts last week, relief and rehabilitation works have been intensified.
Seven bodies were recovered during the week-end in fresh violence in the state.
