The Centre's decision to approve construction of a major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu, which was hardly 25-km from the proposed Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose seaport here, is 'unjustified', Kerala Ports Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally said today.

"The Vizhinjam port is hardly 25-km from Colachel. How can the Union government approve two projects which are so close to each other? The Centre's decision is unjustified," the Minister told reporters at Kannur.

He said he would consult Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the matter and decide on the future course of action.

The Union Cabinet had yesterday approved the proposal to build a major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu, which was pending for 17 years. The port will entail an investment of about Rs 25,000 crore.

The Rs 7,525 crore Vizhinjam project is being developed by the Gujarat-based Adani Group.
