The Union Government today sought time to file a response to a public interest litigation seeking guidelines to ensure that cosmetic goods, personal hygiene products etc., are sold in sealed packs or tubes.
A division bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil adjourned the matter to February 25.
The lawyers of some of the private firms, which have been made respondents, argued that mandatory sealing would increase the prices of their products and the common man would suffer. They also cited case laws to argue that the High Court had no power to ask the Centre to issue guidelines on this issue.
The PIL contends that unsealed packs can be contaminated or adulterated. Many times weight or volume of the content is less than what is mentioned on the packet or tube because they are not sealed, it says.
