"Union government should hand over all the hydro-power projects like Salal and Dulhasti to Jammu and Kashmir state to compensate the losses it suffered due to Indus water treaty," CPI (M) secretary and Comrade Sham Prasad Kesar said at a regional committee meeting here today.

State government must pursue for its share within what India has got out of this treaty because Jammu and Kashmir has lost its capability to fully exploit the waters of Chenab, Jhelum and Indus due to this treaty, he said.

He said long unscheduled and scheduled power cuts and scarcity of drinking water were being faced by the people of Jammu even as the summer season is starting.

The Power Development Department (PDD) issues schedules for power cuts but does not follow them, he claimed.

Even in the e-metered areas, people are facing long unscheduled power curtailments for hours, PDD is violating its order not to apply power cuts in these areas, he said.

The people of Kashmir also have to confront the same type of power curtailments during winter season, he said, adding that it is a routine matter for the people of the state.

There should be reasonable power cut schedules and PDD should implement them and other necessary measures should be taken immediately to give relief to the people of state, he added.
