P Sugunakar Rao, national general secretary of BJP Kisan Morcha told reporters here that with the new policy introduced in 2010, the government was now providing subsidy to only 23 out of 93 types of fertilisers.
The farmers body would organise a dharna to protest against decontrol of prices on various items in the fertiliser sector at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on August 20, he said, adding BJP president Nitin Gadkari would inaugurate the dharna.
While the Centre spent Rs one lakh crore for fertiliser subsidy in 2008-09, it had come down to Rs 63,000 crore after introduction of the new subsidy policy of decontrolling prices of various fertiliser products, he said.
Manufacturers of complex fertilisers were increasing prices at their discretion, imposing heavy burden on farmers, he said. Rao also disputed the Centre's claim that urea price was being controlled, saying decontrol of price would soon become a reality in the case of urea also.
He said government should provide subsidy directly to farmers and restore the control and indicative price policy which was being followed till April 2010.
