The Centre and the states will hold a detailed brainstorming session next week on ways and policies for improving the quality of teaching and teachers.

"HRD ministry is planning to hold a meeting on February 8 in which ministers from the different states will be present and various aspects related to teachers and teaching will be discussed," an official said.

At a meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) last year, it was decided that a special meeting to discuss teaching and teachers' training and recruitment would be held by HRD Ministry with state ministers, sources said.

"Since the meeting comes at a time when the National Education Policy (NEP) is also being framed, if some concrete ideas emerge, these could be forwarded to the committee that is working on it," they added.

HRD ministry has been working to ensure that the "best minds are attracted to and retained in teaching". It had last year formed a committee to examine the various facets of this issue.
