Centre to set up sports schools in NE states to spot talents

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will set up district-level sports schools in northeastern states to nurture young talented sportspersons from this region in next 10 years, officials said.

"District-level sports schools are proposed to be set up in every district in the next 10 years under the special scheme for identifying and nurturing sports talents," Departments of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports joint secretary (development) Dr G S G Ayyangar said here.

Schools for the purpose will be set up in 681 blocks in 95 districts in the eight states of the northeast including Meghalaya with 11 districts and 39 blocks, Ayyangar said.
 

According to the official, the investment proposed for each school is estimated at a cost of Rs 28-Rs 30 crore, of which the administrative control of these schools will be vested with the Ministry Human Resource Development (MHRD).

The total estimated cost for the creation of the complex for sport infrastructure facility has been worked out at Rs 1.6 crore for each block (both outdoor and indoor), he said.
